Land Rover Defender: Installation
1.
CAUTION:
Follow the appropriate steps depending on the part that is being installed and
the wheelbase of the
vehicle.

- If the fixed side steps (VPLEP0392) are being installed to vehicles with
90 or 110 wheelbase, then
complete steps 2 to 27.
- If the side tubes (VPLEP0434) are being installed to vehicles with 90 or
110 wheelbase, then complete
steps 28 to 53.
2. If the fixed side steps (VPLEP0392) are being installed to vehicles with
90 or 110 wheelbase, then complete
steps 3 to 27.

NOTE:
Side step brackets for vehicles with 90 wheelbase will have the text "90" on the
identifier label.
The side step brackets are individually labelled with the position on the
vehicle they must be installed at (RHF,
LHF, LHR, RHR).
- Locate the identifier label on each bracket.

NOTE:
Follow the appropriate steps depending on if the vehicle has 90 or 110
wheelbase.
Install the side step brackets to the vehicle.
- For vehicles with 110 wheelbase complete steps 5 to 7 and then continue
at step 12.
- For vehicles with 90 wheelbase complete steps 8 to 11 and then continue
at step 12.

CAUTIONS:
- Complete step for all vehicle markets except for NAS. Step includes
the install of 2 spacers (G)
between the brackets and the rocker panel.
- Complete step only for vehicles with 110 wheelbase.
- Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the
vehicle. Observe the location
identifier (LHF) or (RHF) on the brackets.
Install the front side step brackets (B1) and (B2) to both sides of the
vehicle.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D) and the 2 spacers (G).
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (E).

- Complete this step only for NAS market vehicles with 110 wheelbase.
- Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the
vehicle. Observe the location
identifier (LHF) or (RHF) on the brackets.
Install the front side step brackets (B1) and (B2) to both sides of the
vehicle.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D).
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (E).

- Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the

Install the rear side step brackets (C1) and (C2) to both sides of the
vehicle.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D).
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (E).

Step includes the install of a
spacer (G) to the rear fixing of the rear bracket. the spacer is installed
between the bracket and the
rocker panel.
- Make sure the brackets are installed at the correct location on the
vehicle. Observe the location
identifier (LHR) or (RHR) on the brackets.
Install the rear side step brackets (C1) and (C2) to both sides of the
vehicle.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D) and the spacer (G).
The spacer is only installed to the rear
fixing.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (E).

CAUTION:
Observe the hand symbol label on the side step bars.
NOTE:
This step only applies to vehicles with 90 wheelbase.
Locate the hand symbol label on each of the side step bars.
- The hand graphic points towards the front of the vehicle to help when
installing the side step bars to
vehicles with 90 wheelbase.
13.
CAUTIONS:
- Install, but do not fully tighten the bolts (F).
- The side step bar must be installed to the correct side of the
vehicle.
- For vehicles with 90 wheelbase take particular care as the handedness
is not obvious. Observe the
hand symbol label on the side step bars.
NOTES:
- This step requires the aid of another technician.
- Side step shown being installed to vehicles with 110 wheelbase.
Process is same for vehicles with
90 wheelbase.
Install the side step bar (A) to the brackets (B) and (C) using the 6 bolts
(F).
14.
CAUTION:
Tightening sequence shown must be followed.
NOTE:
Tightening sequence shown on vehicles with 110 wheelbase. Tightening sequence is
same for
vehicles with 90 wheelbase.
Fully tighten the 4 bolts (E) as illustrated.
- Fully tighten the bolt (E). Torque: 24 Nm
- Fully tighten the remaining 3 bolts (E). Torque: 24 Nm
15.
NOTE:
Tightening shown on vehicles with 110 wheelbase. Tightening is same for vehicles
with 90 wheelbase.
Fully tighten the 4 bolts (D).

NOTES:
- This step requires the aid of another technician.
- Side step shown being removed from vehicles with 110 wheelbase.
Process is same for vehicles
with 90 wheelbase.
Remove the bolts (F) and remove the side step bar (A).
- The undershields and rocker panels will need to be installed before the
final install of the side step bar.
17. Repeat steps 12 to 16 on the other side of the vehicle.

Install the left undershield.
- Install the left undershield.
- Install and tighten the 13 bolts. Torque: 5.4 Nm

NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Install the right undershield.
- Install the right undershield.
- Install and tighten the 13 bolts. Torque: 5.4 Nm
20. Install the soft undershield that was moved aside and the transmission
undershield cover.

NOTES:
- Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.
- Replace any retaining clips, that were damaged during the removal
process, with the appropriate
quantity of spare clips (H) from the kit.
- Vehicles with 90 wheelbase will use 11 clips. Vehicles with 110
wheelbase will use 12 clips.
Install the rocker panel.
- Install the rocker panel to the 11 clips (90 wheelbase) or 12 clips (110
wheelbase).
- Install and secure the 9 lower clips.

NOTES:
- Complete step only for vehicles with 90 wheelbase.
- Replace any retaining clips, that were damaged during the removal
process, with the appropriate
quantity of spare clips (H) from the kit.
- Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.
Install the rear fender moulding on vehicles with 90 wheelbase.

- Complete step only for vehicles with 110 wheelbase.
- Replace any retaining clips, that were damaged during the removal
process, with the appropriate
quantity of spare clips (H) from the kit.
- Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.
Install the section of rear wheel arch liner moulding that was moved aside.
Complete step on vehicles with 110
wheelbase.

NOTE:
Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.
Install the deflector.

NOTE:

Install the front fender moulding bracket.
- Install the front fender moulding bracket to the 2 clips.
- Install and secure the 2 lower clips.
26.
CAUTIONS:
- Make sure to protect the paintwork.
- Make sure the clips are pushed in sufficiently so they are fully
engaged. Do not use force on the
cladding to engage the clips. Do not hit the side of the cladding to engage
the clips.
NOTES:
- Replace any retaining clips, that were damaged during the removal
process, with the appropriate
quantity of spare clips (H) from the kit.
- Install the 2 lower clips first and then install the 2 upper clips.
- Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.
Install the front fender moulding to the vehicle.
- Adjust the 2 clips to the correct gap as illustrated.
- Install the 2 lower clips.
- Install the 2 upper clips.
- Install the front fender moulding.
- Visually check the top clip, that is closest to the wheel, to make sure
the clip is fully engaged.
- Make sure the fender moulding is correctly aligned to the surrounding
bodywork. For additional

correct side of the vehicle.

Install the side step bar (A) to the brackets (B) and (C) using the bolts
(F). Complete step on both sides of the
vehicle.
28. If side tubes (VPLEP0434) are being installed to vehicles with 90 or 110
wheelbase, then complete steps 29 to 53.

- Vehicles with 110 wheelbase, front brackets have a rectangular notch
and rear brackets have a
oval notch.
- Vehicles with 90 wheelbase, front brackets have a rectangular notch
and rear brackets have a
triangular notch.
The side tube brackets are individually labelled with the position on the
vehicle they must be installed at (FR,
FL, RR, RL).
- Locate the identifier label on each bracket.
- The appearance of the arrowed notch is different between front brackets
and rear brackets. The notch
appearance also varies between vehicles with 90 and 110 wheelbase.

Install the side tube brackets to the vehicle.
- For vehicles with 110 wheelbase complete steps 31 to 33 and then
continue at step 38.
