Land Rover Defender: Rear View Mirrors - Description

RVM

The RVM consists of RVM glass in a housing that connects to a mounting bracket by a ball joint. The mounting bracket is attached to the front area of the roof and concealed by 2 covers.

The automatic dimming RVM comprises an electrochromic glass in a case, attached with a ball joint connector to the mounting bracket. The RVM is attached to the mounting bracket, which is bonded to the front area of the roof.

The RVM glass automatically dims to reduce glare from the headlamps of following vehicles in dark or low light conditions.

The RVM is connected to the vehicle wiring by an electrical connector concealed by covers installed over the mounting bracket. Light sensors on the front and rear of the RVM provide light level inputs for the automatic dimming function.

Depending on vehicle specification, the RVM incorporates a HomeLink which has operation switches on the bottom.

The HomeLink also has a Light Emitting Diode (LED) status indicator on the RVM above the switches. The HomeLink status indicator illuminates when HomeLink transmits.

The HomeLink system can operate up to 3 home or other compliant remotely operated systems, replacing the individual hand held transmitters required for each system.

The RVM has a switched power supply from the Passenger Junction Box (PJB).

CLEAR SIGHT RVM

The clear sight RVM combines a wide angle camera with a LCD integrated into an automatic dimming RVM. The clear sight RVM is attached to the mounting bracket, which is bonded to the front area of the roof. The clear sight RVM camera is located in the roof pod.

NOTE: Do not take the clear sight RVM camera apart from the roof pod, the clear sight RVM camera is NOT serviceable.

The clear sight RVM has 2 modes, switched by the clear sight RVM mode switch at the bottom of the clear sight RVM:

When the clear sight RVM camera mode is ON, the conditions behind the vehicle are visible on the LCD through the wide angle camera.

In the clear sight RVM camera mode, it is possible to adjust the following settings:

The clear sight RVM glass automatically dims to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles behind. The clear sight RVM is connected to the vehicle wiring by an electrical connector concealed by covers installed over the mounting bracket. Light sensors on the front and rear of the clear sight RVM provide light level inputs for the automatic dimming function.

Depending on vehicle specification, the clear sight RVM incorporates a HomeLink which has operation switches on the bottom. The HomeLink also has a LED status indicator on the clear sight RVM above the switches. The HomeLink status indicator illuminates when HomeLink transmits.

The HomeLink system can operate up to 3 home or other compliant remotely operated systems, replacing the individual hand held transmitters required for each system.

The clear sight RVM has a switched power supply from the PJB.

DOOR MIRRORS

NOTE: Vehicle with 5 doors is shown. Vehicle with 3 doors is similar.

Rocker Panel

  1. Door mirror cover
  2. Side repeater lamp
  3. Door mirror glass
  4. Proximity camera wiring harness connector (if equipped)
  5. Door mirror wiring harness connector
  6. AAT sensor
  7. Approach lamp (if equipped)
  8. Wade sensor (if equipped)
  9. Proximity camera (if equipped)

The door mirrors attach to the front door structure and connect to the door wiring harness.

The door mirror heating is provided by heater elements bonded to the back of the door mirror glass. The respective door modules control the power supply to the heater elements, in response to signals from the Body Control Module (BCM)/ Gateway Control Module (GWM).

The door mirrors with the power fold feature incorporate a foldback motor in the hinge. Operation of the foldback motor is controlled by 1 of the following:

Power fold operation is inhibited at speeds more than 112 km/h (70 mph). The door mirrors fold forward or backward on impact.

NOTE: When the AAT sensor is disconnected, the AAT sensor needs to be reset to the ambient temperature. The detail appears in the diagnostic and testing documentation.

Door mirror motor assembly

NOTE: Vehicle with 5 doors is shown. Vehicle with 3 doors is similar.

Rocker Panel

The door mirror glass is clipped to the door mirror motor. The door mirror motor is screwed and clipped to the door mirror head. The door mirror motor assembly contains 2 adjustment motors for the door mirror glass. There is 1 motor for the horizontal (left/right) adjustment and 1 motor for the vertical (up/down) adjustment. Power to the motors is controlled by the respective door modules in response to signals from the driver door switchpack. On vehicles with memory recall, the door mirror motor assemblies incorporate horizontal and vertical position sensors.

DOOR MIRROR SWITCHES

NOTE: RHD vehicle is shown. LHD vehicle is similar.

Rocker Panel

  1. Passenger door mirror switch
  2. Door mirror adjustment switch
  3. Driver door mirror switch

The door mirror switches and door mirror adjustment switch are incorporated into the driver door switchpack in the door trim panel. The voltage to the door mirror power fold motors disconnects after 5 minutes when in Power Mode 4 (accessory (vehicle unlocked and Smart Key present) ). The supply disconnects when the driver door is opened.

FRONT DOOR MODULES

NOTES:

Rocker Panel

Each front door module is attached to the closing panel in the related door and connected to the door wiring harness.

The DDM and the PDM interpret the signals from the following into appropriate outputs for the related door mirrors:

BSM SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)

Rocker Panel

  1. System status warning indicator
  2. Warning alert icon

The BSM system is a feature which helps the driver safely crossover in moving traffic.

The BSM system alerts the driver to a vehicle located in the vehicle blind spot. A warning indicator is located in each door mirror towards the outer edge.

DRIVER SEAT MEMORY SWITCHPACK (IF EQUIPPED)

NOTE: RHD vehicle is shown. LHD vehicle is similar.

Rocker Panel

  1. Seat memory switchpack store switch
  2. Seat memory switchpack preset switches
  3. Driver seat memory switchpack

The driver seat memory switchpack is located in the driver door trim panel. The seat memory switchpack switches form a resistive ladder and connect to the DDM through the Local Interconnect Network (LIN). The outputs from the switchpack are converted to the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) body systems bus messages by the DDM.

The DDM transmits the messages to the following:
