Land Rover Defender: Air Conditioning Compressor Commissioning
GENERAL PROCEDURES
ACTIVATION
CAUTION:
Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the component.
1. Set the ignition to the on position, make sure the Air Conditioning (A/C)
is in the off position.
2. Start the engine and allow to run for a minimum of 5 minutes.
3. Set the heater controls to 22ºC, with the fan speed set to 75%.
4. Switch on the A/C system.
5. Open all air vents in the instrument panel.
6. Run the A/C system for a minimum of 5 minutes, while the engine is still
at idle speed.
7. Once this is achieved the compressor is stabilized, with the oil being
distributed evenly throughout the
system.
Air Conditioning System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging
GENERAL PROCEDURES
GENERAL EQUIPMENT
REPAIR
WARNINGS:
- Servicing must be done by personnel familiar with both vehicle system
and the charging and testing
equipment. All operations must be done in a well ventilated area away from
open flame and heat sources.
- Refrigerant must always be recycled before re-use to make sure that
the purity of the refrigerant is high
enough for safe use in the Air Conditioning (A/C) system. Recycling should
always be done with
equipment which is design certified for compliance with SAE J2099 and SAE
J2788. Other equipment may
not recycle refrigerant to the required level of purity. The refrigerant
recover recycling re-charging station
must not be used with any other type of refrigerant. The refrigerant from
domestic and commercial sources
must not be used in motor vehicles A/C systems.
CAUTION:
Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from
foreign material. When
disconnected all openings must be sealed.

EVACUATION
1.
Remove the 2 covers from the 2 A/C charging ports.
2.
WARNING:
Following the manufacturer's instructions, evacuate the Air Conditioning (A/C)
system.
3. Disconnect the HP and LP hose from the 2 A/C charging ports.
CHARGING
1.
WARNING:
Following the manufacturer's instructions, charging the Air Conditioning (A/C)
system.
2.
- Fill the A/C system with the correct amount of refrigerant oil.
- Recharge the A/C system with the correct amount of refrigerant.
3. Disconnect the HP and LP hose from the 2 A/C charging ports.
4. Install and tighten the 2 charging port covers.
