Land Rover Defender: Canvas Roof Frame
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
WARNING:
Make sure the ignition is OFF before carrying out this procedure.
CAUTIONS:
- Do not close the canvas roof within 12 hours of installing the canvas
roof frame assembly.
- Do not remove the windshield.
- Take extra care not to damage any components on removal.
NOTES:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending
on the vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
1.
NOTE:
Release and lower the headliner to gain access for canvas roof removal.
Lower the headliner.
2. Remove both canvas roof side finishers.
3.
Release the 4 drain hoses.
4.
Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
5.
Apply masking tape to protect paintwork.
6.
WARNING:
Wear safety goggles and protective gloves.
CAUTIONS:
- Protect the surrounding components.
- Protect the surrounding paintwork to avoid damage.
Carefully cut through the sealant using a glazing knife.
7.
With assistance, remove the canvas roof frame assembly.
8.
CAUTION:
Only do this step, if the original canvas roof frame will be install.
- Remove and discard the 21 spacers.
- Use suitable tool, to remove all traces of adhesive from the canvas roof
frame.
9.
NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
Remove the canvas roof air deflector.
10.
- Release the inner canvas front section at the 5 clips as illustrated.
- Release the inner canvas 2 side sections as illustrated.
11.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Unhook the 2 belts from the 2 clips.
- Release the outer canvas front section.
12.
- Remove the 5 bolts.
- Release the outer canvas rear section.
13.
NOTE:
Repeat this step on the other side.
- Remove the screw.
- Release the inner and the outer canvas belts.
14.
Release the inner canvas rear section from the frame.
15.
NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Remove the canvas from the guide rail.
16.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Remove the 2 motors.
INSTALLATION
1.
- Install the 2 motors.
- Install and tighten the 4 bolts.
Torque: 4Nm
- Install the 21 new spacers to the canvas roof frame.
2.
CAUTION:
Only do this step, if the original canvas roof frame will be install.
Install the 21 new spacers to the canvas roof frame.
3.
NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Install the canvas to the guide rail.
4.
Install the inner canvas rear section to the frame.
5.
NOTE:
Repeat this step on the other side.
- Install the inner canvas belt as illustrated.
- Install the outer canvas belt.
- Install and tighten the screw.
Torque: 2.2Nm
6.
- Install the outer canvas rear section.
- Install and tighten the 5 screws.
Torque: 4.5Nm
7.
- Install the outer canvas front section.
- Hook the 2 belts to the 2 clips.
- Install and tighten the 4 screws.
Torque: 5.7Nm
8.
- Install the 2 inner canvas side sections as illustrated.
- Install the front section of the inner canvas at the 5 clips as
illustrated.
9. Install the canvas roof air deflector.
10.
CAUTIONS:
- Protect the surrounding paintwork to avoid damage.
- Protect the surrounding components.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free
of foreign material.
Use suitable plastic tool, to remove all traces of sealant from the body.

CAUTIONS:
- Touching the adhesive surface will impair
re-bonding.
- Make sure all mating faces are clean and dry
before applying sealant.
Prepare the canvas roof frame, canvas roof frame flange and trimmed PU
adhesive in accordance with the
instructions included with the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) PU adhesive kit.
12.
WARNING:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
CAUTIONS:
- Make sure that equal pressure is applied to the
full length of the component.
- Do not close the canvas roof 12 hours after
install the canvas roof frame assembly.
- With assistance, install the canvas roof frame assembly.
- Remove the 2 centering pin after gluing operation.
13.
Install the 4 drain hoses.
14.
Connect the 3 electrical connectors.
15. Close the canvas roof.
16. Install the canvas roof side finisher on both side.
17.
CAUTION:
Make sure that no excess sealant residue is evident.
Spray water around the canvas roof frame, mark any area that leaks. Dry the
canvas roof frame and
sealant before applying additional sealant.
18. Install the headliner.
19.
- Initialization and teaching the canvas roof motors:
- Close the roof and push the button during 10 seconds after full closing.
- After initialization, open the roof in full open position and close the
roof by pressing and holding
down the button until the full closure.
