Land Rover Defender: Front Undershield
FRONT UNDERSHIELD - PART NUMBER:
VPLEP0436
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
WARNING:
Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous. Read the
instructions carefully prior to
installation. Comply with instructions at all times. If in doubt, contact your
nearest approved retailer.
NOTE:
This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the
vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
REMOVAL
1. Open the hood.
2.
Remove the hood latch panel finisher.
- Remove the 6 clips.
- Remove the hood latch panel finisher.
3. Remove the front bumper from the vehicle.
4.
Remove the 2 brake ducts as illustrated. Retain the 4 fixings (S1) that
secure the brake ducts to the cooling
module protector.
- Remove the 4 brake duct fixings (S1) and retain.
- Remove the 2 brake ducts and retain.
5.
CAUTION:
On P6 vehicle variants there is a cooling pipe that must be removed from the
cooling module protector.
Release and aside the cooling pipe from the cooling module protector as
illustrated.
- Release the cooling pipe from the 2 arrowed clips and aside the cooling
pipe.
- Remove the 2 clips (S2) and retain.
6.
CAUTION:
Carefully move aside the air conditioning pipes on both sides of the cooling
module protector to allow
access.
Remove the cooling module protector as illustrated.
- Remove and retain the 2 cooling module protector M12 bolts (S3).
- Remove and discard the 2 cooling module protector bolts as illustrated.
Move aside the air conditioning
pipes to allow access.
- Remove and discard the cooling module protector.
INSTALLATION
1.
NOTE:
Complete install step 2 to 5 before tightening the 8 armature bolts.
Loosen the 8 armature bolts to assist the installation of the front
undershield support bar (A).
2.
NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Align and install the front undershield support bar (A).
- Align the front undershield support bar with the vehicle.
- Align the ends of the front undershield support bar with the brackets as
illustrated.
- Make sure the holes for the bolts (S3) align with the holes in the
subframe. Adjust the armature position to
achieve correct hole alignment.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 M12 bolts (S3) to secure the
front undershield support bar to the
vehicle.
3.
CAUTION:
Make sure the air conditioning pipes are positioned correctly on both sides of
the front undershield
support bar.
NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Secure the ends of the front undershield support bar.
- Check the alignment of the front undershield support bar with the
bracket as illustrated.
- Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (C) to secure the front
undershield support bar to the bracket.
- Make sure the air conditioning pipes on both sides of the front
undershield support bar are installed in the
correct location.
4.
CAUTION:
On P6 vehicle variants there is a cooling pipe that must be installed to the
front undershield support
bar.
Install the clips (S2) and correctly position the cooling pipe.
- Install the 2 clips (S2) to the front undershield support bar.
- Install the cooling pipe to the 2 arrowed clips and position the cooling
pipe as required.
5. Tighten the bolts (S3) and (C).

CAUTION:
Tighten the 8 armature bolts that were loosened during install step 1.
Tighten the 8 armature bolts.
7.
Install the 2 brake ducts to the front undershield support bar using the 4
fixings (S1).
8. Install the front bumper.
9.
- Install the hood latch panel finisher.
- Install the 6 clips.
10.
Install the front undershield (B) to the front undershield support bar (A).
- Align the 2 front undershield hooks with the 2 holes in the front
undershield support bar.
- Install the 2 front undershield hooks to the 2 holes in the front
undershield support bar.
- Make sure the front undershield is located correctly.
11.
Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D) as illustrated.
12.
Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D) as illustrated.
13.
Install the 2 fixings (E) as illustrated.
14.
Tighten the 4 bolts (D).
15.
Make sure the front undershield (B) is correctly installed.

FUSE BOX LOCATIONS
Take care to protect the box from
moisture. Refit the fuse box lid at the
earliest opportunity.
Access the fuses as follows:
1. Engine compartment fuse box:
Remove the under-hood cover. Release the four clips to
remove the fuse box lid.
