Land Rover Defender: Lower Control Arm - Vehicles With: Coil Suspension

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

GENERAL EQUIPMENT

REMOVAL

NOTE:

• This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
• This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2-post lift.

2. Remove the rear wheel tire and assembly.

3.

Release the height sensor from the rear lower control arm.

4.

Use a suitable stand to support the lower control arm.

General Equipment: Transmission jack

5.

Remove and discard the shock absorber to wheel knuckle nut and bolt.

6.

Remove and discard the 2 integral link nuts and bolts.

7.

• Remove and discard the tie-rod to wheel knuckle nut and bolt.
• Release the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle assembly.

8.

• Remove and discard the nut.
• Release the stabilizer bar link.

9.

CAUTION: Make sure that during the release of the wheel knuckle assembly, the halfshaft is not released from the differential.

• Remove and discard the bolt.
• Release the wheel knuckle assembly.

10.

NOTE: Note the orientation of the component prior to removal.

• Carefully lower the transmission jack to release the coil spring.

  General Equipment: Transmission jack

• Release the coil spring from the 2 lower seat clips.
• Remove the coil spring.

Remove and discard the nut and bolt.

12.

• Remove and discard the nut and bolt.
• Remove the lower control arm.

13.

• Remove the bolt.
• Remove and discard the nut from the lower control arm.

NOTE: Note the orientation of the component.

• Release the 2 clips.
• Remove the coil spring lower seat.

INSTALLATION

1.

• Install the coil spring lower seat to lower control arm.
• Install the 2 clips.

2.

• Install the nut to the lower control arm.

  Renew Part: Rear lower arm to knuckle nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

• Install and tighten the bolt.

  Torque: 6Nm

3. Install the 2 lower control arm to subframe bolts and nuts.

Renew Part: Rear lower arm to subframe nut and bolt Quantity: 2.

Torque

• Stage1: 100Nm
• Stage2: 240º

• Install the coil spring.
• Install the 2 clips.
• Carefully reposition the lower control arm with the transmission jack.

5.

CAUTION: Only tighten the nuts and bolts when the suspension is at the normal ride height. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.

• Install the wheel knuckle assembly.
• Install and tighten the bolt.

  Renew Part: Rear lower arm to knuckle nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

  Torque

  • Stage1: 70Nm
  • Stage2: 240º

6.

CAUTION: Only tighten the nuts and bolts when the suspension is at the normal ride height. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.

• Reposition the stabilizer bar link.
• Install and tighten the stabilizer bar link new nut.

  Renew Part: Stabilizer bar link lower nut Quantity: 1.

  Torque: 185Nm

7. Install 2 new integral link bolts and nuts.

Renew Part: Rear lower arm to knuckle nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

Torque

• Stage1: 50Nm
• Stage2: 180º

8. Install the tie-rod to the wheel knuckle assembly.

Renew Part: Tie-rod nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

Torque

• Stage1: 70Nm
• Stage2: 240º

9. Install the shock absorber new nut and bolt to wheel knuckle.

Renew Part: Shock absorber to wheel knuckle mounting nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

Torque: 170Nm

10. Install the height sensor link.

11. Install the rear wheel and tire.

12. Use approved Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) wheel alignment equipment to inspect the wheel alignment and adjust if required.
