Land Rover Defender: MHEV Battery
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
GENERAL EQUIPMENT
REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from
foreign material. When
disconnected all openings must be sealed.
NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending
on the vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
2. Remove the Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) battery air duct.

WARNING:
If the measured voltage exceeds 0 Volts +/- 1 Volt a fault may be present with
the MHEV battery.
The normal MHEV battery disconnect/connect procedure should be followed and the
fault
investigated.
Reposition the 2 covers and use suitable equipment to check the voltage at
the MHEV battery negative and
positive terminals.
General Equipment: Digital multimeter

Disconnect the electrical connector from the MHEV battery.
5.
Disconnect the MHEV battery breather hose from the MHEV battery.
6.
- Reposition the cover to get access to the nut.
- Remove the nut.
- Disconnect the MHEV battery ground cable.
7.
- Reposition the cover to get access to the nut.
- Remove the nut.
- Disconnect the MHEV battery positive cable.
8.
Release the 2 wiring harness clips from the MHEV battery cover.
9.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the nut.
- Remove the MHEV battery cover.
10.
- Remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove the 3 brackets.
11.
Remove the MHEV battery.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the MHEV battery.
2.
- Install the 3 brackets.
- Install and tighten the 6 bolts.
Torque: 10Nm
3.
- Install the MHEV battery cover.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 6Nm
- Install and tighten the nut.
Torque: 6Nm
4. Install the 2 wiring harness clips to the MHEV battery cover.
5.
- Connect the MHEV battery positive cable.
- Install and tighten the nut.
Torque: 9Nm
- Reposition the cover.
6.
- Connect the MHEV battery ground cable.
- Install and tighten the nut.
Torque: 12Nm
- Reposition the cover.
7. Connect the MHEV battery breather hose to the MHEV battery.
8. Connect the electrical connector to the MHEV battery.
9. Install the MHEV battery air duct.
10. Connect the startup battery ground cable.
