Land Rover Defender: Driver Airbag
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
WARNING:
- Always wear safety glasses when repairing an airbag Supplementary
Restraint System (SRS) vehicle
and when handling an airbag module.
- Never probe the connectors on the airbag module. Doing so may result
in airbag deployment. Failure to
follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
- Take extra care when handling SRS components.
- To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, do not use radio
key code savers when working on
the SRS. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
- To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the
backup power supply must be depleted
before repairing or replacing any airbag SRS components. To deplete the
backup power supply energy,
disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for 1 minute. Failure to follow
this instruction may result in
personal injury.
NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending
on the vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
1. Before handling any components within the SRS, make sure that the safety
guidelines are followed.
2. Make the Electric Steering Column Lock (ESCL) in the service position.
3. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

NOTE:
Make a note of the adjusted position of the steering column to aid installation.
Release the steering column adjustment lever.
5.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the steering column lower cover.
- Adjust the steering column to get access to the steering column covers.
- Tighten the steering column adjustment lever.
6.
- Release the 4 clips.
- Remove the steering column upper cover.
7.
Make sure that the steering wheel is set to the straight ahead position.
8.
Turn the steering wheel through 120 degrees to the left.
9.
CAUTION:
It is recommended that the Torx TX20 or similar tool is used to release the
driver airbag clips.
Use a suitable tool to release the driver airbag clip.
10.
Make sure that the steering wheel is set to the straight ahead position.
11.
Turn the steering wheel 120 degrees to the right.
12.
WARNING:
Support the airbag at all times.
CAUTION:
It is recommended that the Torx TX20 or similar tool is used to release the
driver airbag clips.
Use the suitable tool to release the driver airbag clip.
13.
WARNING:
Support the airbag at all times.
Rotate the steering wheel 120 degrees to the left to return it to the
straight ahead position.

WARNING:
Support the airbag at all times.
CAUTION:
- Take extra care not to damage the wiring harnesses.
- Do not pull out the driver airbag by force. If the driver airbag has
not released, repeat the
steps from 7 to 11, failure to follow this instruction may result in damage
to the component.
NOTE:
Make a note of the orientation of the wiring harness to aid installation.
- Release the driver airbag.
- Use a suitable tool to unlock the secondary lock and disconnect the
electrical connector.
- Remove the driver airbag.
INSTALLATION
1.
WARNING:
Support the airbag at all times.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the airbag wiring harness is fully wrapped up as illustrated
shown.
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Reposition the driver airbag into the correct location.
2.
WARNING:
Driver airbag module installation can be confirmed by hearing 2 audible clicks,
1 for each clip.
CAUTION:
Make sure the driver airbag gap is uniform as illustrated shown.
- Install the driver airbag.
- Make sure the driver airbag is correctly installed into the clips.
3.
- Install the steering column upper cover.
- Install the 4 clips.
4.
- Install the steering column lower cover.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 5Nm
5.
- Position the steering column in the correct location.
- Tighten the steering column adjustment lever.
6. Connect the startup battery ground cable.
