Land Rover Defender: Rear Mudflaps

REAR MUDFLAPS - PART NUMBER: VPLEP0388, VPLEP0390

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

WARNING: Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous. Read the instructions carefully prior to installation. Comply with instructions at all times. If in doubt, contact your nearest approved retailer.

CAUTION: If protective wax has been applied to the vehicle it must be thoroughly removed before starting this procedure.

REMOVAL

1.

CAUTIONS:

Follow steps 2 and 3 to remove the rear wheels and tires.

WARNINGS:

Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift. If a suitable 2 post lift is not available then refer to the wheel changing section of the owner's handbook.

NOTE: Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.

Move the rear wheel arch liner aside.

  1. Remove the 5 retaining clips from the wheel arch liner.
  2. Release the wheel arch liner from the lower edge.

NOTES:

Rear Mudflaps

Move the bracket as illustrated to allow the heat shield to be accessed on both sides of the vehicle. On vehicles equipped with a diesel exhaust fluid tank, only complete step on the left side of the vehicle.

  1. Remove the fixing.
  2. Move the bracket away to allow access to the heat shield.

NOTE: Illustration shows heat shield on left side of the vehicle. Process is same for removing the heat shield on the right side of the vehicle.

Release the heat shield from underneath the bracket. Aside the heat shield to allow access to the arrowed locations.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean the areas of the vehicle where the rear mudflaps will be installed to make sure there is no dirt or debris.

CAUTION: If the supplied template (B) is damaged during the install process, or damaged in the kit, then a new template can be created by printing out the appropriate template as shown in steps 24 and 25. After the template has been printed, the scale bars must be measured to make sure the template has been printed at the correct size.

Make sure the supplied template (B) is the correct size. Measure the 2 scale bars on the supplied template using a ruler.

CAUTION: Make sure the templates are cut out accurately.

Use scissors to cut out the templates. Follow the cut guide lines exactly.

CAUTIONS:

NOTE: Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.

Rear Mudflaps

Locate and secure the template (B) as illustrated. Align the template with the edge of the bumper. Make sure that the edge of the template matches the bumper radius edge as arrowed.

NOTE: Take care to mark the hole positions accurately.

Mark the 2 positions on the rear bumper. Use the template to identify where to mark the hole positions.

WARNING: Make sure to wear suitable personal protective equipment.

Drill a hole at the marked positions on the bumper.

7. Remove the template.

Rear Mudflaps

Use a suitable file to remove any remaining plastic within the holes so they have clean edges.

CAUTION: Make sure that the rear mudflap is correctly positioned on the rear bumper.

Place the rear mudflap against the rear bumper.

  1. Insert the rear mudflap upper stud into the top hole.
  2. Flex the mudflap and insert the rear mudflap lower stud into the lower hole.

Rear Mudflaps

Use the 2 lower holes in the rear mudflap to identify the location on the bumper where the 2 lower holes will be drilled.

  1. Make sure there is no gap to the moulding surface.
  2. Mark the 2 positions on the rear bumper.

11. Remove the rear mudflap from the vehicle.

WARNINGS:

Drill holes at the 2 marked positions on the rear bumper.

Clean the area as illustrated.

CAUTION: Make sure that the rear mudflap is correctly positioned on the rear bumper.

Rear Mudflaps

Install the rear mudflap onto the rear bumper.

  1. Insert the rear mudflap upper stud into the top hole.
  2. Flex the mudflap and insert the rear mudflap lower stud into the lower hole.

Rear Mudflaps

Install the 2 nuts (E) and the 4 washers (D) to the rear mudflap studs as illustrated.

NOTE: Complete step only if installing rear classic mudflaps (VPLEP0388).

Apply masking tape as illustrated if installing rear classic mudflaps (VPLEP0388). Make sure the masking tape is applied below the arrowed holes where the 2 bolts (F) will be installed in step 17.

NOTE: If installing rear classic mudflaps (VPLEP0388) then the mudflap will need to be pulled away from the fixing holes in order to insert the bolts (F) and the washers (G). The rear classic mudflap needs to be flexed back considerably to allow the bolts (F) and the washers (G) to be inserted.

Secure the rear mudflap as illustrated. Torque: 2.5 Nm

  1. Install the 2 washers (G) and the 2 bolts (F).
  2. Install the 2 washers (C) and the 2 nuts (E).

NOTE: Remove the masking tape if the rear classic mudflaps (VPLEP0388) have been installed.

Check the alignment as illustrated.

19. Repeat steps to install the rear mudflap to the other side of the vehicle.

20. Move the heat shield to the correct position.

21. Install the bracket to secure the heat shield to the bumper on both sides of the vehicle. On vehicles equipped with a diesel exhaust fluid tank, only complete step on the left side of the vehicle.

  1. Move the bracket to the correct position.
  2. Install the fixing. 9Nm

NOTE: Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.

Install the rear wheel arch liner.

  1. Install the 5 retaining clips.

WARNING: Apply a small amount of grease to the bore and spigot areas of the wheel before installation. Make sure the grease does not come into contact with the vehicles braking components and the wheel stud threads. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

NOTE: Complete step on both sides of the vehicle.

Rear Mudflaps

Install the rear wheel and tire. Install and tighten the 5 nuts in the indicated sequence.

Torque

CAUTION: The template must be printed at the correct size. Always measure the 2 scale bars on the template, using a ruler, to make sure the template has been printed correctly.
