Land Rover Defender: Camshaft Carrier
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
PART(S)
REMOVAL
NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending
on the vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
The following step(s) applies to:
All vehicles
1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
3. Remove the upper timing chain.
4. Remove the Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) assembly.
5. Remove the fuel injectors.
6. Remove the engine vent oil separator.
7. Remove the evaporative emission canister purge valve.
8. Remove the High Pressure (HP) fuel pump.
The following step(s) applies to:
Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
9. Remove the coolant pump drive belt.
The following step(s) applies to:
Non plug in hybrid electric vehicles only
10. Remove the accessory drive belt.
The following step(s) applies to:
All vehicles
11.
- Disconnect the 8 electrical connectors.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Release the 4 clips.
- Reposition the engine wiring harness away from the camshaft carrier
assembly.
12.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the 2 engine cover support mounts.
13.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Reposition the coolant hose away from the camshaft carrier assembly.
14.
- Remove the 19 bolts.
- Remove the camshaft carrier assembly.
15.
Remove and discard the camshaft carrier gasket.

NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the 2 Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP).
- Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.
17.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the oil filler pipe.
- Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

CAUTION:
Note the installed position of the component(s) prior to removal.
- Loosen the bolts 1 turn at a time in the illustrated sequence.
- Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the intake camshaft.

CAUTION:
Note the installed position of the component(s) prior to removal.
- Loosen the bolts 1 turn at a time in the illustrated sequence.
- Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the exhaust camshaft.
INSTALLATION
The following step(s) applies to:
All vehicles
1.
NOTE:
This step is only required if previously removed.
- Lubricate the components with clean engine oil.
- Install the intake camshaft to the noted removal position.
- Install and tighten the 10 bolts in the illustrated sequence.
Torque: 11Nm
2.
NOTE:
This step is only required if previously removed.
- Lubricate the components with clean engine oil.
- Install the exhaust camshaft to the noted removal position.
- Install and tighten the 10 bolts in the illustrated sequence.
Torque: 11Nm
3.
NOTE:
This step is only required if previously removed.
4.
- Install 2 new O-ring seals to the 2 CMP.
- Install the 2 CMP sensors.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 8Nm
5.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and free from debris and foreign
material.
Install a new camshaft carrier gasket.
Renew Part: Camshaft carrier gasket Quantity: 1.

CAUTION:
Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and free from debris and foreign
material.
- Install the camshaft carrier.
- Install and tighten the 19 bolts in the illustrated sequence.
Torque: 10Nm
- Tighten the 19 bolts in the illustrated sequence.
Torque: 28Nm
7.
- Reposition the coolant hose into the correct location.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 10Nm
8.
- Reposition the engine wiring harness into the correct location.
- Install the 4 clips.
- Connect the 8 electrical connectors.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 6Nm
The following step(s) applies to:
Non plug in hybrid electric vehicles only
9. Install the accessory drive belt.
The following step(s) applies to:
Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
10. Install the coolant pump belt.
The following step(s) applies to:
All vehicles
11. Install the HP fuel pump.
12. Install the evaporative emission canister purge valve.
13. Install the engine vent oil separator.
14. Install the fuel injectors.
15. Install the Continuous Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) assembly.
16. Install the upper timing chain.
17. Connect the startup battery ground cable.
