Land Rover Defender: Rear Door Latch
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Protect the surrounding paintwork to avoid damage.
NOTES:
- This procedure contains illustrations for left hand drive vehicles,
right hand drive vehicles are similar.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending
on the vehicle specification, but the
essential information is always correct.
1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
2. Remove the rear door trim panel.
3.
- Release the 5 clips.
- Remove the access cover.
4.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the interior door handle.
5.
- Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors from the rear door control
module.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the bass speaker.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the clear exit detection system
switch.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the passive entry sensor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear door window switch.
- Release the 6 wiring harness clips.

- Remove the screw.
- Remove the 16 bolts.
- Disconnect the door release cable.
- Remove the inner door panel.
7.
Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the exterior door handle
assembly.
8.
- Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the rear door latch.
- Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
9.
- Remove the access cover.
- Loosen the screw, but do not fully remove.
10.
- Pull the rear door exterior handle.
- Remove the rear door lock access cover.
11.
Remove the rear door exterior handle as illustrated.
12.
- Remove the screw.
- Remove the exterior door handle gasket.
13.
- Remove the 3 bolts.
- Remove the rear door latch assembly.

NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.
Release and remove the 2 caps as illustrated.
15.
- Release the 2 clips.
- Remove the rear door latch upper cover.
16.
- Release the 3 clips.
- Remove the rear door latch lower cover.
17.
- Disconnect the interior door release cable from the door latch.
- Disconnect the exterior handle cable from the door latch.
INSTALLATION
1.
- Connect the exterior handle cable to the door latch.
- Connect the interior door release cable to the door latch.
2.
Install the rear door latch lower cover to the latch.
3.
Install the rear door latch upper cover to the latch.
4. Install the 2 caps.
5.
- Install the rear door latch assembly.
- Install and tighten the 3 bolts.
Torque: 12Nm
6.
- Install the exterior door handle gasket.
- Install and tighten the screw.
Torque: 3Nm
7. Install the rear door exterior handle.
8.
- Pull the driver door exterior handle.
- Install the rear door lock access cover.
9.
- Tighten the screw.
- Install the access cover.
10.
- Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the rear door latch.
- Install the 2 wiring harness clips.
11. Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the exterior door handle assembly.
12.
- Install the door release cable.
- Install the inner door panel.
- Install and tighten the screw.
Torque: 3.2Nm
- Install and tighten the 16 bolts.
Torque: 6Nm
13.
- Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the rear door control module.
- Connect the electrical connector to the bass speaker.
- Connect the electrical connector to the clear exit detection switch.
- Connect the electrical connector to the passive entry sensor.
- Connect the electrical connector to the rear door window switch.
- Install the 6 wiring harness clips.
14.
- Install the interior door handle.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 6Nm
15. Install the door handle access cover.
16. Install the rear door trim panel.
17. Connect the startup battery ground cable.
