Wiring Harness Overlay
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Overview
Where damage to a vehicle or a wiring harness has occurred; it can be more
cost effective to repair the wiring harness
with an overlay or a lower level assembly, rather than replacing a full wiring
harness. This is especially the case where
pre-terminated leads or other wiring harness repair kits are not available.
Description
The overlays and lower level assemblies are available from the parts
catalogue and include such items as;
NOTE:
Locate the damaged cable / assembly and connectors required. For additional
information, refer to: Electrical
Wiring Diagrams and Electrical Reference Library.
- SRS repair kits and wiring
- Antenna leads and other communication wiring
- Infotainment and display wiring
- Camera link leads
- Trunk / tailgate links and wiring
- Other special cables
CAUTIONS:
- Any damaged cable / assemblies must not be repaired and must be
replaced.
- The replacement overlay must follow the original wiring harness
route, to avoid the risk of introducing
electrical interference issues.
NOTES:
- The original cable / assembly must left be in the wiring harness and
the overlay taped to the wiring
harness along the original route.
- Where possible, when installing a replacement cable / assembly, cut
off the unused ends of the damaged
cable / assembly at their exit points from the host harness and discard.
- The cut ends must be free from sharp edges. Any strands of wire must
be taped over, to prevent
damaging adjacent wires or cables or any personal injury.
- The replacement cable / assembly must be attached with coverings to
replicate the existing installation of
the damaged cable / assembly.
- If the cut end of the cable / assembly is in an area of the vehicle,
which is exposed to moisture, i.e. the
engine bay; Cover the cut end with glue-lined heatshrink, squeezed with
pliers to seal the end and prevent
moisture ingress.
Examples
Some examples of installed wiring harness overlays are illustrated below:
Visible Wiring Harness Overlays
Where wiring harness overlays are visible, with all components in their
installed condition, the overlay harness must
be fully taped to the original wiring harness, with no gaps in the tape binding.
